“Why Be Effective?“
Sermon Series: “Habits of Effective Christians”
“Why Be Effective?“
Effective is being productive or persuasive.
Being messy and in everybody’s business is not effectiveness. That’s just being a “hot mess.”
1. We need to be effective because God Requires It.
2. We need to be effective because the Resources Allow It.
3. We need to be effective because the Reward is Worth It.
Extra notes at end of sermon
God equips us in various ways to be effective.
Be Effective by using the guidance of the Bible in your hand:
1. Loving your enemy
‘If you see your enemy hungry, go buy him lunch;
if he’s thirsty, bring him a drink. Proverbs 25:21
2. Watch your tongue
‘Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly’ (2 Timothy 2:16).
3. Avoid quarrelling
2 Tim. 2:23,
‘Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.
4. Bring good news
‘Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land’ (Proverbs 25:25).
5. Do not seek honour
If we seek our own honour we will find that true honour eludes us. ‘It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honourable to seek one’s own honour’ (2 Tim. 2:27).
6. Be self-controlled
7. Don’t worry about what others say
You do not need to fear bad publicity or slander. (Proverbs 26:2)
8. Endure hardship
“… therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus’ (2 Tim.2:10).
9. Avoid distractions
Keep a clear focus and avoid distractions that waste time.
10. Keep to the rules
11. Meditate on God’s words
12. Focus on Jesus
The Gospel is all about Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 2:10)
13. Turn away from evil
It involves turning away from wickedness and fleeing ‘the evil desires of youth’ (2 Tim. 2:19, 22)
14. Be a peacemaker (2 Tim. 2)
Strife is like a deadly, contagious disease. It spreads rapidly unless it is confronted and stopped.
15. Be kind to everyone
‘The Lord’s servant … must be kind to everyone’ (2 Tim.2:24). Everyone includes everyone – not just your friends…”
16. Don’t be resentful
Resentment poisons relationships.
17. Allow God to speak through you
18. Seek the Lord
‘Seek and you will find’ (Luke 11:9).
19. Bind yourself to the Lord
This is the type of relationship God wants us to have with him – walking closely with him all the time (Jeremiah 50:5).
